Day 7: The Landscape Is Changing
Day 7 - May 31st, 2026
We woke up to another beautiful northern Saskatchewan morning at Courtney Lake.
We are 390 km along this adventure.
I ran 60 km today. I know that sounds far, but it felt more challenging than my past runs that were similar distance prior to this adventure.
Day 6: Hashbrowns with Ketchup and 330 Kilometres
Distance: 50 km
Total Distance: 330 km
Route: Highway 905 south from Geikie area to Courtney Lake
Weather: Clear skies, light south wind early, warming quickly to 29°C+
Road Conditions: Good gravel highway with rolling hills and long exposed stretches
We woke to another beautiful northern Saskatchewan morning; this time at Geikie Campground.
A Better Day on the Road
After camping at Hidden Bay last night, we woke up to a calm, cloudy morning.
I ran 62 km today.
Route: Hidden Bay to Geikie River
Weather: Cloudy morning, partly sunny afternoon, approximately 17°C
The Seasonal Road is Behind Me
Jack and Joey rolled into camp first thing in the morning, complete with another truck to help support the adventure.
It was great to see familiar faces again. We were still sitting around with our coffee talking about yesterday's windstorm when suddenly it became a bit of a "hurry up and get moving" kind of morning.
I covered 53 km on day 4…but walked more than I would’ve liked.
Headwinds, Hills, and Amazing People
Today's run started with some of the toughest conditions so far.
The road surface was excellent, but a strong headwind followed us for most of the day.
Gusts reached nearly 50 km/h, and combined with the warmest temperatures we've seen so far, it made for a challenging day on the road.
I ran 60 Kilometres today (day 3 of this adventure) for a total of 165 kms so far.
Hills, Heat, and Jack Pine Forests
The day started at our wild camp near Wapita Lake and ended at another wild camp beside what we jokingly called “No Fish Lake.”
I covered 60 km today.
The First Steps South: 45 Km
We started at 9:00 a.m. on the bank of the Fond du Lac River, the farthest north point we could reach. Next we went to Stony Rapids School where students welcomed me to their pancake breakfast, had posters made to celebrate the run, and did a big countdown to start the run! I even had some new friends to run alongside me for about 1 km!
I ran partway toward Black Lake, then we marked the spot and drove into the community to spend time at the school and meet the Band Chief and councillors.
Some amazing drummers sent us off when I started running. My brother, Matthew, had made some friends working in this area.
I’m so thankful the Dene community of Black Lake was willing to create such a beautiful send off!
In total, I ran 45 kilometers today.
May 24
Surprisingly, the 1041 km drive to Stony Rapids didn’t feel as daunting as I thought it would. It was beautiful the whole way north, and I’m already excited to see it all again on foot.
