Day 6: Hashbrowns with Ketchup and 330 Kilometres
50 km today; 330 km total.
Day 6 - May 30th, 2026
Distance: 50 km (Just a heads up, for those of you following along on Strava, my watch isn’t catching all of the kilometres)
Total Distance: 330 km
Route: Highway 905 south from Geikie area to Courtney Lake
Weather: Clear skies, light south wind early, warming quickly to 29°C+
Road Conditions: Good gravel highway with rolling hills and long exposed stretches
We woke to another beautiful northern Saskatchewan morning; this time at Geikie Campground.
Geikie Campground - home for the night of day 5 and the place where Day 6 began.
Matt and I started the day off talking about some of the key moments and experiences of the trip so far.
The day started with a significant crew change. Before heading out, we gathered for photos and said goodbye to Matt and Sandy, who had been part of the adventure from the very beginning.
Matt shared some pretty profound words - it was a special moment.
A few kilometres north of camp, we returned to yesterday's finish line and officially began Day 6. The send-off included hugs, photos, and a final round of encouragement before the road pulled us south once again.
My crew is ever-changing and ever-amazing!
This was the first crew in the northermost section (from left to right: Brad (dad), Sandy (step mom - I refer to her as my mom), Megan (me), and Matthew (brother)
Then my crew grew: here’s the Murphy Lake to Geikie Crew
And the new crew starting today (from left to right): Jack, Megan, Brad and Joey
The morning was nearly perfect. Clear skies, light wind, and cool temperatures.
As we continue south, Saskatchewan just keeps getting greener.
If you look closely, that's a grader behind us... we were pretty proud that it never caught us :)
Jack joined me running today. It’s always great having a run and visit with Jack!
Meg and Jack taking a break and learning a little local history.
By mid-morning, we had covered over 30 kilometres and it is so nice to be out here!
By noon, temperatures had climbed toward 30°C. The light morning breeze had become a warm headwind.
Running, running and more running!
Lunch arrived just in time.
A nice little break in the shade!
A relaxing break in the shade, plenty of fluids, and lunch featuring rehydrated hashbrowns and ketchup, helped everyone recharge before heading back onto the road for the final push toward Courtney Lake.
I had a bit of tummy trouble during the afternoon, but it settled down well enough and we kept moving.
The truckers were great all day. Lots of waves, lots of honks, and one gas station kindly filled our water jugs when supplies were getting low.
Then, we hit the 300 km mark.
The final stretch toward Courtney Lake was a good one. Traffic was fairly light, the forest smelled incredible, and everyone was looking forward to camp.
Some more steps south with Jack
A quick stop before the final push into camp.
Before too long, we reached Courtney Lake.
Day 6 finished at Courtney Lake.
It was another beautiful campsite. Quiet, scenic, and right beside the water.
A trucker who had seen us on the road earlier stopped by camp for a chat before continuing on his way. Apparently word is getting around what we’re up to around here.
Once camp was set up, we had some time to enjoy the evening.
A pretty nice place to spend the night.
Bush poutine à la Joey. It really was great.
As usual, everyone had their own preferred sleeping arrangements.
Jack's setup for the evening.
It always feels so good to crawl in my tent!
As we were settling in for the evening, we heard a little more about the wildfire near Shellbrook.
Fifty more kilometres down.
Three hundred and thirty kilometres completed
And tomorrow we get to do it all again.
These updates are shared one day behind as the journey continues across Saskatchewan.
